In the past, Aubervilliers is known as an industrial city. Nowadays, the city is known for its diversity and music culture.
Like other suburb areas in Il de France, Aubervilliers is mostly habited by low to middle class people. A lot of them commute to Paris for work everyday in order to keep the low expenses. The demand of social housing is extremely high.
The La Maladrerie social housing complex was built between 1975 - 1985 by Renée Gailhoustet. It is the largest housing complex in Aubervilliers. This housing complex consists of 900 units on an eight hectares land. Beside housing, the complex provides a lot of retail opportunities to the people.
The construction of the housing complex was divided into three phases. Each phase consists of several buildings and it shows a significant development in the design of the unit.
The chosen building is one of the examples of a building from the second phase of the design. Compared to the previous phase, this phase of the design shows a deep consideration for private spaces.
The shape of the bulding is dictated by balcony spaces in each of the units. It gives a unique character to the building. However, the design separates the building into 4 different towers. The intervention was a way to explore the possibility of creating a common area that allows interaction and common spaces for the tenants of each specific building.
